How To Tie Dye

Tie dying is a great activity to both express your creativity and increase your wardrobe! Whether you are a seasoned tie dyer or a completely beginner, this guide on how to tie dye can be very valuable:

1) The first step in learning how to tie dye is to fold the fabric into whichever pattern you would like to create. For more information on selecting a tie dye pattern just check out our article on tie dye patterns. Tie Dye Fold

2) Next, soak your fabric in Soda Ash Fixer to make them tie dye ready. This will allow the colors to more easily stick to the fabric. A good mixture would be one cup of Soda Ash Fixer per gallon of warm water. Be very careful to wear a dust mask and some gloves to protect yourself from unnecessary harm.

3) Next, apply your dye. You can do this with a paint brush, sponge, or squeeze bottles. The amount of different colors you apply depends on personal preference, and will vary from person to person. Use your creativity to create the perfect tie dye!Applying Tie Dye

4) After applying your colors, you will want to but the fabric in a tube or plastic bag, and allow it to sit for anywhere between 5 and 24 hours, depending on the instructions in your tie dye kit. The longer you let the tie dye sit, the brighter the colors will be after washing.

5) The final step is to wash the fabric. Fill your washing machine with hot water and a quarter cup of synthrapol or professional detergent. Rinse the tie dyes thoroughly and then place them in the machine. You should rinse with the ties on with cold running water, then warm water as you untie. A good indication of a thorough rinse is when the water rushing through begins to get clear. Washing Tie Dye
